FAQ

A news API is an online content aggregator providing a live feed of news data sourced from millions of reputable sites around the globe. Webhose.io’s News API provides access to over 10MM news posts daily in over 250 languages, with advanced filtering capabilities such as by person, location, or organization.

An effective news API should be user friendly and enable a variety of personal and commercial uses, from staying up to date on world news, to ongoing brand monitoring and sentiment analysis, and even perform reliable predictive modeling. Webhose’s news API provides structured news metadata in JSON and XML formats.

Both individuals and organizations can see benefits to regularly relying on a news API. Organizations can scale various business efforts, including marketing functions such as brand monitoring and sentiment analysis, financial endeavors such as predictive modeling, and various projects requiring access to a reliable, varied, and structured news database. With no limit to the number of monthly keywords that can be tracked, support for wildcard expressions, and the ability to process a request every second, a subscription to Webhose’s News API is a must for modern companies.

On the other hand, individuals who used Webhose’s News API can benefit from a balanced, unified, structured JSON or XML news feed that aggregates news content from 230+ countries in 70+ languages. Knowledge is power!

Webhose.io regularly crawls millions of sites, but it doesn’t rely on a stagnant whitelist of sites. Instead, our smart crawlers find new sites and new content to crawl dynamically. We pride ourselves on the ability to constantly add new news sources, typically within a few hours of detection.  To confirm whether we crawl a source or not, you can use the API playground, use the “site:” filter, or email support@webhose.io with the list of sites you want to check.

While Google is inarguably the best-known search engine in the world, it no longer provides its search results in a machine-readable format. By comparison, the Webhose News API scans and extracts data from millions of global data sources, providing individuals and organizations with live access to 10MM+ daily post from a wide range of sources, including blogs, reputable news sources, and other content sources.

For context, the Google Search API was deprecated in April 2017 and was replaced by the Custom Research API, which returns results from user-built Google custom search engines. These custom search engines are commonly embedded in websites and blogs and poll a list of URLs defined by the user. In contrast, Webhose’s APIs are suitable for providing enterprise-class applications with the volume of data they require from open web search results.

If no specific sorting parameter has been selected by the user, results in the live feed are sorted by default according to the recommended order of the crawl date. You can, however, change the sorting method at any time using any of the following values: relevancy, Facebook likes, Facebook, Linkedin or Pinterest shares, Facebook comments, domain rank, performance score, spam score, participants count, rating, and more.

For example, the following call will return posts ordered by the number of likes:

https://webhose.io/filterWebContent?token=XXXX-XXXX-XXXX&format=json&q=*&sort=social.facebook.likes
